A Faith That Isn't Tested Is a Faith That Can't Be Trusted

It's easy to say we trust God when things are going well. When the prayer gets answered. When the job works out. When the relationship is healthy. When the door opens exactly when we hoped it would.

But what happens when things don’t go the way we planned?

What happens when God seems quiet? When you’re waiting for an answer you haven’t received yet? When you’re walking into something new and you have no idea what’s ahead?

That’s where faith gets real.

James 1:2–4 says:

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”

I don’t think James is telling us to pretend that hard things are enjoyable. Trials hurt. Waiting is hard. Uncertainty can be exhausting.

But he is reminding us that God can do something in us through those seasons.

Our faith grows when it has something to hold onto.

Sometimes we don’t realize how much we’ve been relying on our circumstances until our circumstances change.

It’s easy to trust God when we can see what He’s doing. It’s much harder when we can’t.

That’s where faith comes in.

Hebrews 11:1 says, “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”

Faith means trusting God even when you don’t have the full picture.

Abraham is one of the clearest examples of this. God told him to go, and Hebrews 11:8 says that Abraham “went, even though he did not know where he was going.”

He didn’t get a five-year plan.

He didn’t know every detail.

He just knew God had called him to take the next step.

Sometimes that’s all God asks of us, too.

Just take the next step.

God Can Use the Hard Seasons

None of us would probably choose a season of testing.

We would rather God just make everything easy.

But some things in us only become stronger when they have been stretched.

Peter compares tested faith to gold being refined by fire:

“These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold…may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.” — 1 Peter 1:7

Fire reveals what is genuine.

In the same way, difficult seasons can reveal what we have really been trusting.

Maybe it’s our plans.

Maybe it’s our job.

Maybe it’s our relationships.

Maybe it’s our ability to control what’s next.

And sometimes God allows those things to become uncertain so that we learn to place our security somewhere deeper.

In Him.

You Can Trust God Without Understanding Him

One of the hardest parts of faith is accepting that we aren’t always going to understand what God is doing.

We want answers.

We want timelines.

We want to know how everything is going to work out.

But Proverbs 3:5 says:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”

It doesn’t say, “Understand everything and then trust God.”

It says trust Him instead of leaning on your own understanding.

There may be things in your life right now that don’t make sense.

You might be wondering why a door closed.

Why you’re still waiting.

Why you’re being asked to start over.

Why the path ahead feels so unclear.

You don’t have to have all the answers to trust God.

Sometimes faith sounds like:

“God, I don’t understand this, but I know You are good.”

“I don’t know what’s next, but I know You are with me.”

“I can’t see the whole road, but I’ll take the next step.”

That’s faith.

Don’t Confuse Testing With Abandonment

Just because you’re going through a difficult season doesn’t mean God has left you.

Sometimes we assume that if God is with us, everything should be easy.

But Scripture never promises that.

Jesus actually told His disciples that they would have trouble in this world. But He also told them, “Take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

The presence of trouble doesn’t mean the absence of God.

He can be present in the waiting.

He can be present in the uncertainty.

He can be present in the transition.

He can be present when you don’t know what comes next.

And sometimes, looking back, we realize that those were the seasons where we learned to recognize His presence the most.

Maybe This Season Is Growing Your Faith

If you’re in a season right now where you’re having to trust God more than usual, don’t automatically assume something is wrong.

Maybe God is growing something in you.

Maybe He’s teaching you that you don’t have to have everything figured out.

Maybe He’s teaching you to surrender your timeline.

Maybe He’s showing you that your security doesn’t have to come from knowing what happens next.

Maybe He’s preparing you for something you can’t see yet.

We don’t always get to know what God is doing while He’s doing it.

But we can know who He is.

And sometimes that’s enough.

A faith that has never been tested might sound good in theory.

But a faith that has walked through uncertainty and still chooses to say, “God, I trust You,” is different.

It has been lived out.

It has roots.

It has experienced God’s faithfulness.

So if you’re in a season of testing right now, keep going.

Keep praying.

Keep trusting.

Keep taking the next step.

You don’t need to know exactly where you’re going.

You just need to know who you’re following.

A faith that is tested becomes a faith that can be trusted.
