The Gift of Tears

Many of us have been taught to “be strong” or “move on” quickly when grief or pain strikes. In reality, suppressing emotions can hinder spiritual, emotional, and even physical healing. Leanne Payne teaches that tears are not a weakness—they are a sacred gift from God, a natural pathway through which the soul releases pain and finds restoration.

Psalm 56:8 says, “You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book.” This verse shows God’s intimate awareness of our grief. He notices every tear, every moment of sorrow, and values our emotional honesty. Tears, therefore, are not wasted; they are honored by God and serve as a bridge toward deeper healing.

Crying allows the soul to process grief and pain that might otherwise remain hidden. Suppressing tears often results in emotional numbness, unresolved grief, or even physical symptoms of stress. Emotional release is a God-given tool that can free the heart, allowing God’s presence to bring comfort and restoration.

Vulnerability is central to this process. Payne emphasizes that leaning into our tears invites God into the rawest parts of our hearts. It is in these moments of surrender that the Spirit meets us with love and peace. Tears open us to the transforming work of God, reminding us that healing is not about moving on quickly but moving deeply into His care.

Practical ways to honor your tears include:

Setting aside sacred time. Find a quiet place where you can pray, reflect, or simply allow yourself to feel without distraction.

Journaling your emotions. Write down your feelings and invite God to speak into your pain.

Acknowledging your grief. Don’t try to rationalize or minimize what you feel. Recognize that sorrow is real and valid.

Inviting God into the moment. Speak honestly to Him, allowing your tears to become a prayer of surrender.

Through this process, tears become more than just an emotional release—they become a spiritual practice. They cleanse the soul, open the heart to God, and help transform grief into peace, pain into wisdom, and vulnerability into strength.

Tears are a sacred gift. They are a tangible expression of our humanity and a doorway to God’s healing presence. Embrace them, lean into them, and allow them to guide you toward emotional and spiritual freedom.
